Reading Etiquette

As one of the main parts of writing, it's equally important to have proper reading etiquette. Here are my top tips on how to get the most out of your reading:

1. Get comfortable. Wherever you choose to read, make sure it's somewhere you're comfortable sitting for a long period of time. Ideally, this should be somewhere with plenty of natural lighting and full support - you don't want to strain your eyes or hurt your back!

2. Make sure you get your drinks and snacks before you settle down. This means you won't have to interrupt your reading to get up and find something. My favourite snacks to get are some biscuits and cake, and nice a cup of tea (or glass of prosecco if I'm in the mood!). I got this Pina Colada cake from www.sponge.co.uk and it's the perfect thing to keep me seated while I read for hours! (And having the company of the cat doesn't hurt either).

3. If you don't think you have enough time to read, try allocating it a small amount of time every day. Getting into a routine with your reading really helps - sometimes I go to the library for 2 hours at a time to read, and I find having that time allotted helps me get a lot more of it done. You might also want to try reading in bed before you go to sleep. Although this won't be a specific amount of time, it still positively promotes reading as a ritual.

4. Know what you want to read next. This is particularly helpful if you are reading something that you have to read, but aren't particularly interested in. If you have something to look forward to after, you're more likely to finish reading the first book - and fast!

5. Keep buying books. At this point, I'm basically addicted to buying books; both real books and on my kindle. But it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Keeping up to date with new releases is really important, especially if you want to be an author. I like to browse Kindle books for the discounted 99p books and stock pile them for a rainy day. The more books you have, the more you're going to read!

Happy writing!
