Let's assume now that your character isn't a native to the place you've been/researched, but is instead just visiting. Of course, the nature of their visit will very much impact what they do in this place. Let's look at a few scenarios:
1. They're simply visiting on a holiday. Are they alone or with someone else? What do they like doing normally? Might they be trying something out of the ordinary for them on holiday for some reason - eg. a life threatening illness or a recent death? Do they have any fears or mental conditions that might stop them from doing certain things? Might they overcome these fears with help from a travel companion or even a complete stranger?
2. They're visiting family. Again, this depends very much on the context of the visit. Is it a happy or sad occasion - eg. a wedding, or a death/illness? How often have they visited before? Are they close to this family member? Did they come of their own accord, or were they forced by another family member or friend? How long has the family member lived there?
3. As part of work or a voluntary programme. Do they have a job to do while they're there? How did they get the funding? How often do they do this? Have they been anywhere else on this programme before? What is their job/motivation for volunteering? Are they working closely with locals? How much (if any) time off do they get? What area of town might they be staying in? What is their economy like?
Once you've answered all these questions, you should be able to start writing your character and their journey with more confidence.
Happy writing!
