This week we're going to be looking at the novella. A novella is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel. Again, there is no specific length for a novella, but if you were writing one it would probably be considered as a novella up to 40,000 words.
If you think about novellas you've read, a lot of them are probably children's books: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, The Railway Children, and a lot of Michael Morpurgo books, to name a few from my book shelf.
I will go into more depth later in the week, but if you'd like to get a head start, read a few novellas. Obviously, this isn't as easy as reading flash fictions or short stories, but I think you'll find it useful to see how they differ. There are lots of novellas available free or very cheap online or on your reading device.
You might also be surprised to see how many you have already read. How about The Turn of the Screw, Of Mice and Men, Breakfast at Tiffany's, or A Christmas Carol? These are all great places to start if you haven't read them, but if you have, reflect on how they differ or not from flash fictions, short stories and novels.
Happy writing!
