In this post, I'll be talking about rereading your work whilst you are still writing it.
There are a few reasons why this is beneficial:
1. Motivation - you might be completely stuck on what to write next and struggling for inspiration. One great way to feel motivated to write again is by rereading what you have already written. You can get a better sense of flow and direction by linking back to previous ideas/nuances, and your ideas will be more fresh in your mind.
2. It will help you find any plot holes. You don't want to keep writing if there is a big plot hole in your story, and the best way to find this is by rereading as you go. This way you can correct the minor issue rather than find a major issue once you have finished writing.
3. It will help lighten your load at the end of your writing process. If you do the job of rereading in small pieces every day or week, you can be more confident once you have finished your story. Editing is a huge job, and you will likely never be 100% satisfied with the end result, writers never are, but by breaking it down you are more likely to notice mistakes or areas to change.
These tips are probably most beneficial for a longer piece of writing, such as a novel or novella, or possibly even a short story. With writing as short as flash fiction, you are more likely to want to reread at the end of the process, which I will be discussing next.
Happy writing!
