As I said in my first post, a novella is typically a stand-alone book of up to around 40,000 words. A novella is able to be published in a book by itself, whereas short stories and flash fictions are more likely to be published in collections.
We are now moving into the realms of using more developed story writing techniques. You will need to think a lot more about your plot and its progression than you would with a shorter piece. For tips on some novella techniques, have a look under the writing features tab.
A novella can draw inspiration from anything - fiction, non-fiction, for the sake of this week even plays. There really are no limitations on style or technique!
You could start by planning some main points of your story: characters, plot, narrative, etc. Really go into detail on these - this might not be something you're well practiced at if you've only written short stories and flash fictions so far, so spend some serious time on this. A novella takes a lot more time on planning and writing than anything we've considered so far, so stay tuned for my writing tips this weekend!
Happy writing!
