What is a Short Story?

Similarly to flash fiction, there is no exact definition of a short story. Short stories tend to be a few pages which can generally be read in one sitting.

Unlike flash fiction, however, you are more likely to find traditional story techniques - such as exposition and characterisation. You are able to set the scene in a way that isn't really possible in a flash fiction.

It can be useful writing practice to turn a flash fiction into a short story: what could be explained better? Introduce your characters earlier on and more thoroughly. Continue the story to see what happens next or in the aftermath of an event.

Again, a short story is not limited by any genre, techniques or style. Play around with perspectives, write an embedded narrative, change the perspectives. Modern short stories have no limits at all and are becoming more experimental all the time! Also, remember that your notebook is your own space. Use it to try things out, and if they don't go to plan then who cares!

Try getting started on a short story or transforming a flash fiction from last week into a longer piece.

Happy writing!
