This week's reading is a short story by Robert McBrearty published in the Literary Juice magazine.

I chose this story for this week as it goes to show the hard work and dedication that goes into writing and editing a story. The style of the piece is quite colloquial, and we get a small glimpse into Chuck's unfulfilled dreams and his dysfunctional marriage as well as his wife's perspective.
Neither of the characters seem particularly nice. Chuck is bitter about his currently unsuccessful writing career and his relationship with Julie, and is convinced that getting his story published in the magazine will solve both, providing him with lots of other women. Julie, on the other hand, seems unphased by her husband's death, and changes the name on his writing to her own. But I think that McBrearty gets away with two such unlikable main characters due to the brevity of the piece.
I thought it would be a bit of fun to look at this tongue-in-cheek story about the publishing world this week as we reflect on the beginnings of editing. I won't be providing related exercises this month as these would heavily rely on you having already written a decent length piece of writing which you were starting to edit. Instead, I'll just be providing some useful reading (after all, all reading is useful when you're writing).
Happy writing!
